The Enormous Turnip

This week in Nursery, we have been learning all about the story of The Enormous Turnip. The children have investigating vegetables using their senses by digging in the soil for vegetables and then preparing soup with them. They got creative when they painted pictures and printed with vegetables and dressed up to act out the story as well as playing with small world characters from the story. They learnt new mathematical vocabulary by pretending to be the turnip getting bigger and bigger and bigger and also the concept of first and last by standing in a line to help the farmer pull up the turnip.

Most importantly, they had lots of fun and loved sharing the story together.

Tasing the soup
Chopping the vegetables
Digging in the soil
Vegetable jigsaws
Washing up after eating the soup.

Year 3 Rocks and Fossils

We have just completed our two week Rocks and Fossils topic in Year 3.

We have looked at all three major rock types, fossils and soil. After our lesson, the children went outside to do some digging. The children are also watching and listening to the reaction between limestone and lemon juice.

Our work linked very nicely to our work on Volcanoes and Mountains.

The Romans are up next (another nice link to volcanoes). We hope the children love the topic. Since Mr Maher’s favourite film is Gladiator, he may like it too.

Cross country success at SJB

All of KS2 were out today aiming to beat their times from last week.

We talked about our breathing, running at a steady pace and having enough energy to sprint at the end.

Most of the children either beat or SMASHED their time from last week.

We will have one more go next week.

Year 5 Mayan Masks.

In Year 5 we have started looking at the ancient Maya civilisation. This week we have designed and made our own Mayan masks. The Maya used masks for celebrations, rituals and even in tombs!

We looked at one of the most famous Mayan masks. It was found in the royal tomb of Pakal the Great. It is mosaic made from jade.

We used this mask as our template made our masks using mosaics of shiny and animal print paper.

We are looking forward to filling the rest of the board!

Year 1 Plants work

Year one have worked especially hard the past two weeks in Science. We have finished our topic on plants and trees. One of our favourite parts of this week was going outside to discover what trees are around our school. We took some leaves and created some lovely leaf rubbings using wax crayons. We enjoyed this so much we created more than one! Take a look at some of our fantastic work from the past two weeks.

Bike to school week!

Everyone is welcome to bring their bikes and scooters to school next week.

We have lots of space in our new bike sheds.

We would ask that children act responsibly when waiting to come into school. They MUST walk with their bike when they come into the school grounds.

We think it is very important that our children are as active as possible at the moment.
